Picaflor Olympics

Return to News

Yes, we held our very own Picaflor House Olympics, with teams from the UK, Canada and, of course, Peru competing. Excitement built up throughout the previous week as we counted down the days to Friday's Olympic Games and, in both English and art classes, the kids completed activities relating to the Olympics.

In English, the kids made flags for the three countries competing in our Games, and did word searches, crosswords and other learning activities relating to sports and the Olympics. In art class the kids made gold, silver and, ah, red medals – we didn’t have any bronze paper or glitter glue! They also made Olympic torches and laurel wreaths ... well, they were meant to be laurel wreaths but I think the Olympic Federation might have something to say about the designs. Some look more like fashion statements or American Indian headbands!

And what a fantastic afternoon we had at Picaflor House on the day of the Games, with 3-legged races, sack races, a tug-of-war, throw-the-ball-in-the-bucket competitions, and a medal ceremony, all followed by a birthday party, with cake, for those kids with birthdays in July and August, and a farewell to the five volunteers who left that day.

And which was the winning team? The gold medals went to Peru – no, it wasn’t rigged! – with Britain just beating Canada for the silver medals. The day was a huge success!
